Student with bad credit... please help!

I'm off to university on Saturday and have heard from my local authority that my loans & grants will not be available for 6-8 weeks. Many of my friends have told me not to panic as I can live off my interest free overdraft... except I don't have one. Due to a bad mistake with a credit card 2 years ago when I was 18, I am getting refused for student accounts and overdrafts.
I am totally stuck as my family aren't in a position to help me, and I haven't been able to work over the summer due to recovering from glandular fever. I'm getting myself so worked up and upset over this, I feel completely stuck and have no idea what to do.
Are the bank likely to help me out if I explain the situation? I've been refused from 3 banks due to my credit rating, so I really don't have much hope left for the others.

I doubt the bank would help you out at the moment. You may be classed as too big a risk especially with the current financial climate. Have you tried speaking to your student union? There is probably a short term no interest loan they could give you or maybe a grant. It will be something they see every year. Good luck.0

Are you staying in halls? If yes, go see them straight away, explain the situation, and they will help you out (delay date for paying bill, and show you who to go and speak to). If not, go straight to the student union and enquire about getting a hardship loan/grant.I don't think your credit history will matter for these.
I would also rephone the student loan company and tell them to hurry up, as well as phoning the university first thing tomorrow morning and ask them what they advise. They might be able to sort out something for you this week.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Your university will more than likely have a hardship fund to which you can apply to get some short term financial aid. You may have to pay it back though.0

You might be able to get help from the Access to Learning fund, think there's a thread pinned up in this forum with lots of details0
