Home security

Hi everyone, this may not be the place for this post but I am very worried.
I've just moved into a new house in a new place that I didn't know much about before. I have found out 2 distressing things in the first fortnight.
1) There is a planning application in for 6detached houses within 100 metres on a green field site which will materially affect the road in front of mine as this will be the access (Im currently 3 house away from end of cul-de-sac that ends in the field and this was a major reason for buying).
2) I'm living opposite a convicted house burglar who is widely believed.to still be carrying on his trade.
I have a large barky dog but am worried about when I leave the house with him
Suggestions for any action on either point publicly or PM,would be gratefully received.

Sounds like you didn't do your research on the area before you bought the house!

Home security? Do you have an alarm?

You could sell and move on?

    Sorry not very helpful!

    1. Did you not check before buying with regards to developments in the local area? Your only recourse now is to see if you/neighbours can get together to object.
    2. Local gossip is often incorrect. And if it is true he'd have to be a very stupid burglar to crap in his own backyard. Most go further afield. But if security worries you that much, get an alarm fitted and make sure your locks are all up to scratch. Make it hard for them to get in and they'll go elsewhere.

    First - deep breath.

Having detached houses built next to you is hardly something to worry about - people on here have issues with "travellers", huge homes with demntia sufferers being adjoined to their house and other issues that make yours sound trifling.

Security - in general a burglar won't crap on his own doorstep so is unlikely to target you. Why don't you setup a cctv camera and record all activity at the front and rear of your house? Or invite him round for "tea" and make sure he sees your big barky dog, and make a throwaway comment about how he mained your previous postman who stuck his hand through the letterbox.

How do you know about the burglar?

Suggested actions? Do some due diligence.
  • Hi,

if the 'burglar' is approachable then just talk to him as a neighbour, let on you don't know about has nefarious activities, see what he recommends for household security, he should know what is the most difficult for his 'trade', thus the best for you.

And then buy a shotgun. In fact buy two to be sure...

Just because he dresses like this doesn't make him a burglar

Well, it would have been sensible to know more about the area before buying.

    Question;

    (a) when did the planning application go in? After you purchased?

I suspect the neighbour would go elsewhere if you have a barky dog. Though I can understand the stress as I've lived next door to one myself (who would have been stupid enough to break in next door). On the plus side, they'll be away a lot.

I'd probably upgrade locks to the antibump/drill type.

You can just buy the barrels if you're reasonably competent at DIY. It's also sensible to not mention things like going on holiday when you're down the local if you're in that type of area.

Your local police force may also have a crime prevention officer who can look over your property and give advice on security aspects particular to your property.

  • It's many years since we went through the house buying process but weren't you made aware of the application before you purchased - though I'm ready to accept that the application went in after the solicitor did all the searches.

I only ask as we were made aware of a school being proposed on the opposite side of the estate when we bought our house.

As for your neighbour could this be malicious gossip? If not get a decent alarm fitted.
