How long does a switch take?

My current fixed price tariff stops at the end of March. I now get emails from CEC and others telling me to switch BUT all the options are more expensive than what I have, so I'd like to take advantage of my present deal, while not ending up paying the very expensive standard. Any ideas how long a switch takes from the moment you fill the forms until the new company takes over?
Also: both CEC and energy helpline give me a list of 17 unkown providers (with the exception of PFP I never heard of any of them). As a matter of fact, the first with a decent service rating is TOTO (anybody knows them??).
The first familiar name (NPower) comes 18th.
Thanks for any feedback!

Found this by the CAB: "Switching to a new supplier should take around 17 days, but often takes up to 3 weeks. The new supplier should contact you to tell you what day your supply should be switched. If it takes longer than 17 days, contact the supplier to find out why."
Still fedback would be welcome. Thanks!

Suppliers have 35 days from receipt of a request to switch to transfer a supply. Not all suppliers are signed up to 17 day switching (it's a voluntary code). Provided your existing supplier receives notification from the new supplier that a switch is in progress before your contract ends, you will remain on your present tariff until the switch goes through. Note: some of the smaller suppliers take no action to initiate a switch until after the cooling off period has passed (e.g.; Iresa)

Thanks. Yes, I know I will be on my current tariff until the switch takes place or it ends, whatever happens first. Just needed to find out how long that period might be. As a matter of fact, Iresa is the 2nd best provider according to the comparison sites. But it does not have very good reviews and CEC says " It's a new company that says its systems help it make substantial savings, but we do have questions over the sustainability of this model".
    Do you know the company?

I am an Iresa customer. As both my energy supply and credit balance are now protected by Ofgem, I see no risk whatsoever in switching to a small supplier. Yes, they may go bust but so what? I maintain a weekly spreadsheet which gives me an accurate 'statement' of my account so a bill is a nice to have.Personally, I go for the cheapest deal and switch frequently (less so now that prices are rising).
