Acer Aspire 5536 Laptop

Options
Have an issue with my laptop, it takes an age to switch on, I can hear the fan going but nothing on the screen. I have done the battery pull. Also replaced the battery. Nothing on the screen then after a few hours it shows Windows. Any ideas? Hard drive on the way out? Had the laptop since 2009.

The first thing you need to identify the nature of the problem, hardware issue or software issue. It seems that some hardware related issue.

If you have a spare computer, download a Linux ISO image and make a bootable USB, see what happens ? If Linux start without problem, then test a hard disk (and any hard disk problem detected BACKUP YOUR DATA TO EXTERNAL DEVICES !!!!)

This isn't a super easy one, but if you (or your friend) is reasonably familiar with computer, I love to assist you in more details.
  • Thank you for the advice. Bought myself an external hard drive and have backed up my data.

Hope you know how to restore your data? Having the ability to restore only select files is also a bonus?

You can find and launch Event Viewer by opening the Control Panel, accessing the System and Security category, selecting the Administrative Tools item, and double-clicking the Event Viewer icon. However, you can also simply click the Start button, type Event in the Start Search box, and press Enter once Event Viewer appears and the top of the results display. ...... look under SYSTEM especially around the time you switched it on. The red and yellow warnings, but not all are disastrous and the dcom ones are common.

Check the disk (either via W7 disk properties/tools/check disk - runs disk check at boot or from a safe mode command prompt).
