Hi I'm after advice for a family member please. They are registered with telephone preference service (tps) and have been for a number of years. However of late the can get between 5-10 unwanted calls a day. As you can imagine this is very annoying for a elderly person. Can anyone advise on what else can be done to stop these please?
Thank you in advance.

Buy a call blocker or a BT8600 call blocking phone.0

If they're with BT, they could try signing up for their recently announced, free BT Call Protect.

Yes they are with bt. Can we not report it any where as tps is obviously not working.
Call blocker phone do you have to sign up somewhere or is it within the phone?Things will get better day by day.0 -
Do what I did- get rid of the phone line. Bliss.0

If they are with BT, then I assume that they get CLI for free.
The BT8600 is an excellent piece of kit and will certainly stop the problems that she has been having.
It will need to be programmed up with the numbers that you want to get through immediately, but it's very easy to add further numbers later.
You do not have to sign up for anything.
I've had mine for over 18 months now and not one nuisance call has got through.
I suggest you Google it to see if it will meet your needs0 -

If the calls are from outside of the UK then nothing can be done as to reporting them.
The call bllocker option is something to look into.0 -
I have had nuisance calls each day for the last month or so. No disclosure of BT landline number so has to be a random attack. The clue is a 10 digit number - never the same number so blocking individual numbers is a waste of time. I have BT call protect and signed up to the TPS - no use at all here. I am forced to answer the call then kill it to avoid activating the answerphone service. There are also legitimate 10 digit codes for some areas of the UK so blanket blocking by BT on this basis not possible.
Have called BT a couple of times and spoke to a useful guy yesterday. It's apparently Asian originated international calls but spoofing numbers over here. They call with recorded message talking about gas installation, etc but are really after your bank details, etc. Only way to effectively stop this is to block all international calls on the BT Call Protect if you are in a position to do this without killing legitimate contact - I'm not:-( He told me that this is currently a common problem but they usually leave you alone after 4 - 6 weeks.
Very, very irritating whilst it continues.PLEASE DO NOT STEAL

TPS only stops marketing calls and only stops them from genuine companies. It has no effect on scammers and criminals nor could it ever hope to.
Invest in a trueCall plug-in unit or a BT 8500 or BT 8600 series Call Guardian handset. Known callers get straight through. For all unknown callers, irrespective of CLI or not, the unit issues a verbal challenge. The phone doesn't ring until the challenge has been completed. Scammers and silent calls simply hang up at this point and the phone doesn't ring.
If anyone completes the verbal challenge, the phone rings and you have the opportunity to accept or reject the call. You can also add the number to an 'always accept' or 'always reject' list if you wish.0 -
I have caller display and can block numbers myself on my Panasonic cordless phone. The phone doesn't even ring.0

The problem with the Panasonic unit is that when an unwanted call comes from a new number the phone does ring and your day is interrupted. You're forever playing whack-a-mole and likely adding numbers to the block list that will never call you again because the scammer spoofs a different phone number to call from, each time they call.
With the trueCall unit all unknown callers have to pass a verbal challenge before the phone rings. This crucial difference makes it much more effective.0
