Trademens and dodgy quotes!

Wife asked someone to come around and quote for articial grass and concrete slab edgings.

I'd measured it roughly as 36 sq m. Fella gave us a quote for 40 sq m of grass and 18 sw m of paving slabs. Hmmm - my measurements may not be great but thats 22 sq m extra.

So quoted £2200 for 40 sq m of grass, and £800 for 18 sq m of paving.
£2200 is approx £55 per sq m of grass.

Out of interest I contacted same fella and asked for a quote per sq m. Came back with £35 per sq m !!!!!!!

So looks like, not only has he vastly overdone the sizes but hes also added £20 per sq m onto the job.

Always seems to happen when my dear wife is there when tradesmen come for a quote. I get the impression that, for some, a quote will depend on what they think they can screw out of you.

  • Get another quote from someone else, but bear in mind that the 40m2 includes some extra for wastage etc.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Well i guess its just a quote. I once hired a solicitor for some work and he quoted me £800 but it cost a fair bit more than that.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I thought a quote means the final cost, anything else is an estimate

Were the quotes for exactly the same type of artificial grass? The extra metres required could be down to wastage as it will be cut to fit, just like a carpet.
  • The other thing is that there are many different types of artificial grass ranging from cheap stuff that looks and feels like plastic to top quality stuff that is hard to tell apart from the real thing (from standing height). Have the two people quoted for the same product; have both included vat; does either price include levelling, fitting, delivery or a goat?
