Used to live very rural, and my tips from what I can remember is if not mains gas check your fuel levels and make sure they are to the max by Nov lastest, solid fuel, Lpg, oil etc.
If you have no mains drainage, check the cess pit is emptied at least twice a year, smells in summer if too full (soz) and frozen overflow in winter is not a present chore.
Also, as has previously been said, invest in the biggest chest freezer you can afford or have room for - fill with cheapo bread till 'real food' takes over.
Also if you have pets/live stock make sure you have what you need for them esp in winter.
If you have an area to set aside for a store room, do so basics such have been previously recommended such as UHT milk, bread flour, yeast, pasta, tinned goods also washing powder lots of salt for winter freezes ( paths etc)
be friendly to the locals and ask advice, but don,t try too hard, i,m sure your not like this but had one lady new to our area (from a big big city) who vertually stalked some of us because her idea of moving to the country was very far removed from what she had imagined (think calender girls) and the poor love was really dis-conbobulated till she found her feet - all ended well :)

We will have mains electric and sewerage. The hot water and radiators are run on a eco community boiler system which is in most of the 42 houses and we will just pay a small service charge and the cost of what we use. I also have an open fire in the room off the kitchen so am really looking forward to that as I love real fires but there is also a large radiator in that room so have options. Best of both worlds!! There is a real fire in the main bedroom and a radiator.

  • Are you by any chance going to live in the alternative technology centre at Machynlleth ? The district heating system rang a bell....

A wood burning stove gives off MUCH more heat than an open fire, and if you get one with a glass door in the front you can still see the flames ... very cosy. We put one in when we first moved to our very rural (nearest supermarket 15 miles) house, and I would not want to live without it. You can also cook on top of it.... might be worth considering?
Anyway, hope the move goes smoothly, and that you will be very happy indeed in your new home!

That depends on whether you have a local supply of cheap or free wood!

I wouldn't ever go for a cheap stove after buying our Clearview. It lights so easily and is completely controllable. There are other brands that are very good.

Quite agree - a good one is a real investment; my sister skimped on hers and got a cheapo one, and the difference between hers and ours is huge, both in how easy it is to light, keep going, control, plus it gives out far less heat - something to do with the quality of the metal used, I think.

We could not afford to buy one at all at the moment, but boy am I glad we bought it when we could!
