I'm with the other posters, hire people to pack your things and move them. They do it amazingly quickly and are worth every penny.

Ok if you are skint, then I think it is quicker if you pack things up. It means fewer trips backwards and forwards as you can carry more.

As a man I have to totally agree with your husband, which is unfortunate as on this occasion he is wrong ;)

I done a DIY move, twice in the last year, I packed up boxes and black bags with stuff, I never had large furniture so it wasn't too much of a problem but I had moved stuff backwards and forwards and was in and unpacked in 3 days.

It isn't too stressful if you start putting stuff in boxes just now by 10days time you'll be left with just the basics out and then it's just a case of moving everything you've packed up.

For large furniture I would say get a firm in to move, much easier and will most likely be much less stressful.

Can't you do a mixture of the two? Get him to box the breakables and the fragile things, sling the rest in the car whilst he is busy.

If it makes you feel better, I picked up the keys to my new house on thursday. I have - no power, no water, no gas, no phone, no kitchen and a hole where there should be a bathroom... and a month to make it habitable :) I don't have a car either. Should be fun :D

I think you should move stuff room by room one room a day just leaving basics in the room then for the big stuff get a man and a van to help we did this with my duaghter and had everything already down stairs and on the lawn so it was really quick and easy

im in the process of doing this, we are moving just round the corner so we have already packed all the stuff that was in the loft and spare room into boxes and stored them in the spare room ready to move.

the rest of the house, i.e kitchen, living room, our room and bathroom we are going to move one room at a time in big blue ikea bags :) .

so tomorrow when we are round the house doing more decorating i will be moving the bathroom stuff bar the bare minimum we need.

then tuesday i will start to move some of the kitchen stuff and will move that gradually over the next week whilst OH does the decorating.

We are lucky in that we are in rented and have all the big things provided so are just paying for delivery of the big things that we need rather than lugging them round ourselves.

I hate moving.. I'd rather be eaten alive by mice!!!

Moving non-packed stuff is not viable.. it is messy and time consuming and frustrating. It also means you take stuff you need to get rid of.. taking crap with you is not a bright move!

Pack the non-essential stuff NOW.. spare bedding/extra crockery etc... MARK THE BOXES FOR THE ROOM THEY NEED TO BE IN!!!!! This is massively important and saves loads of time. .. take it and put it in the room where it belongs!

The last thing you do is dismantle beds.. move the beds and rebuild them immediately that you get there THEN start the unpacking.. if you have a bed to get in then you can quit the unpacking at any point.

You move the stuff... you make a cuppa.. you build the beds.. then start on one room get it straight and everything unpacked.. any excess for that room is binned!!

It's lovely that you have the two week overlap. I moved about three minutes down the road, but we did it by car with a small trailer for the bigger stuff - and we didn't have much furniture - and I literally moved the chest of drawers with the drawers still full - slightly embarrassing when a male friend got to help out with the knicker drawer! I do think some things will need to be boxed, but lots won't and bin bags are great for clothes, bed linen etc.

Keep your OH busy with the big stuff and maybe try to do a few car loads when he's working or emptying the shed or otherwise engaged.
