Deffo agree about hte box with kettle/tea/coffee etc...... and the loo roll!
I took it one step further. On moving day, strip your bed of bedding and bung it straight in the car. First chance you get, take it out of the car and bung it back on the bed. That way when exhaustion hits, you haven't got to locate the bedding and make it before you can collapse.
When packing, label every box with a number and a note of which room to take it to when you arrive. List the contents of each box on a master list as you pack up (keep this with you in the car too!) If anything is needed (you then just need to scroll down the list and find where it is....so just one box to open. Takes a bit of time along the way, but can save a huge amount in the long run0 -
Number the boxes then write the box numbers and what they contain on a piece of paper. That way when you get in you can see at a glance if a numbered box is left behind or lost or whatever. If you are using a moving company, label the kettle box and add anything you need to keep safe in that box. Tell the delivery boys that you will get them a cup of tee when you get there and hand them the box- they will be extra careful with that box. Oh also, don't label the contents if there is anything expensive in it. It's almost like a robbery dream- they can pick and choose the best ones if someone gets access to them that they shouldn't.
Ask on freecycle for boxes and that will save some money.
Finally- enjoy your new placeFeb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
Hi tooties,
As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've added it to the main thread on moving house which has lots of tips and advice that should help.
Good luck in your new home.

I've moved several times and this is how I go about it.
Choose a couple of rooms. Get a kitchen timer. Get some boxes. Get a big black marker pen. Write THROW AWAY on one box and GIVE AWAY on the other. Set the timer for 10 minutes. start in one corner of 1 room or 1 draw or shelf. Go right to left, or clockwise and put anything surplus to requirements in either box. Just do it, dont think about it. When the timer goes off, or the box if full if thats sooner, take boxes to the car . Go back to house, repaeat for another 10 mins but this time in room 2. Next repaeat all, 10 mins room 1 , 10 mins room 2. take all boxes to car.
Now, stop and make a coffee, sitdown and drink it. then get in car and take to the tip and the charity shop.
Do this once or twice a day until its all cleared of everything you do not need anymore.
Next, get a load more boxes and pack away seasonal stuff eg summer tops, spend half an hour on this. Go into another room and do same. then stop for a coffee break. Do this a week or 2 before moving. ark each box with the marker pen as per room they belong in.
On move day reserve a box for loo roll, fairy liquid, dishcxloth, mugs, kettle, tea coffee milk and biscuits and any pet food. enjoy the move!"The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0 -
If you were to pay a removal company to pack for you, do they do it all in room order?
Also, what would be the rough price of this?
With 3 little ones and being a non driver (ad hating relying on family for driving all the time) im seriously considering this.
We are only moving 5 minutes down the road from one 3 bed terrace to another with LOTS of stuff
Thanks for any help :TEveryone who thanks me when ive helped will get a 5% share when I win this weeks Euromillions......:p0 -

We paid less than £600 (can't remember exactly) for a fully packed service, moving 40 odd miles so it was an all day thing. There were 3 guys, it took them around 4 hours to pack everything and get it on to the van (they even packed the kettle, coffee making stuff, biscuits and toilets paper box). They each took one room to pack, then just doubled up with the big items of furniture. When we arrived at the new house they placed everything where I wanted it, nothing was broken and when we'd unpacked they came and collected all the boxes and packaging materials.
I would recommend getting someone round to give you a quote, it's a very helpful process and they'll give you some great tips as they go round pricing things up. Best money I've ever spent.0 -
Could do with some advice please. We are moving house in about 10 days or so and are in the lucky position whereby we get the keys to the new place 2 weeks before we need to leave are present house. The move itself is no great distance either, only 5 minutes drive up the road. We are having major discusions (rows) about the best way to move. I say just grab as much as we can and keep shifting it in the back of cars, don't really bother to pack as such just shift things room by room, objects in storage containers and the likethen hire a van to move the big stuff. Hubby though thinks we should wrap everything up properly and box everything. It's doing my nut in. I hate moving and our last move was so stressful, I just want this to go well!
Anyone have any experiences they could share please?0 -
Since once having been still unpacking belongings from a hired van at 11pm in the rain I have always paid for a removal van, DIY moving is one economy too far for me! They are insured and they have experience of lifting/carrying/the best way to get stuff in and out.
I firmly believe there are some things where I should just to go to work to earn the money doing the thing *I* can do well to pay someone else to do the thing *they* can do well and removals is one of those things!Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.100 -
What's the best way to move house?
Do you want the best way or the cheapest way?
Best way is to pay someone to do it for youThey then move your heavy WM, supply all the packaging and boxes, pack and unpack, and are insured for breakages.
When we last moved, like you we were going just around the corner. We got several quotes and found a local company who did an excellent job at a very reasonable price :T:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
oh I should have said it needs to be the cheapest way possible! We are totally skint and can't afford for removal men to do the job. It's more about time saving for me....why spend days packing and boxing, when I can just sling stuff in the back of the car! Or is that unrealistic?0
