tax credit overpayment

please help. got a letter in this morning saying that my husband has been overpaid £461 w.f.t.c.called them up and they want to take £30 per week to pay it off.can they take this much? i don't work as i look after our children so we only have one wage(which ain't that great) plus the tax credits.that a whole lotta money for us.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

They should take 25% of your current entitlement - does that look about right? You could ask for an additional hardship payment, but you'll have to pay both this and the overpayment back eventually, so perhaps it's better to get it over and done with if at all possible.
You need to understand why this overpayment has arisen (an increase in income presumably) and in future keep your details up to date so that you don't get a repeat of the problem next year.

Have you made sure that they are correct?
You can use http://www.entitledto.co.uk/ to work out how much you should have got or work it out on paper. Also what about the £2500 allowance - would that make any difference to you?
