Change in insurance prices?

Has there been some sort of car insurance costing review lately?
my car is due for renewal on 15th next month and i looked at renewal prices about 2 weeks ago and the cheapest was Elephant at £536, Norwich Union was £1070ish. After seeing somebody's post about pay as you go insurance i decided to have a look and see what that comes out at.
when you apply they ask you to get a NU quote and put in the quote reference so i had to re-quote. The quote came back at just over £700 and when trying Elephant again it was £416.

through Barclays. Not a firm which would have immediately jumped out at me for car insurance. She said the girl in the bank told her they have really sharp prices at the moment & the saving proved very worthwhile.
The web address for a quote was on the front of todays Guardian:

think it had something to do with me putting 20 years no claims in instead of 2. They offered me 10 months for £391 which is a result anyway0
