Which suppliers provide a paper bill or statement through the post?

Hi,

Is there a list of energy suppliers that provide an actual paper statement or bill through the post? Or does anyone know of any suppliers that do this? So far I know of British Gas.

The companies listed as cheapest for me on Cheap Energy Club offer either paperless billing and/or require an online account. The paper/paperless question is not usually directly answered, so you have to read through a lot of detail on suppliers’ websites, or reviews, to see if anyone has mentioned receiving an actual paper bill.

I intend to pay by direct debit but I don't want to set up an online account or provide regular meter readings online. On switching, I'll provide meter readings by phone (unless the supplier wants to read the meter themselves), pay by (fixed) monthly or quarterly debit and receive a paper statement through the post every few months.

Thanks for your help.

I suspect most of the companies will provide paper bills and have Direct Debit payment facilities if you take their(expensive) standard tariff. After all there are still millions of people who do not have the internet.

If you want cheaper gas/electricity without an on-line account, you will have to contact each company, or look at the conditions of each tariff.

All the big six do, certainly E.ON have the option, although you forgo a £5/yr paperless discount per fuel.

Interesting. I wonder if any of the others do this. I'm with EDF and I've not come across it. Of course it's not really a discount. It's an additional charge levied on those who don't go paperless.

I can only speak as a former E.ON customer, but the prices on the tariff comparison labels only include the direct debit discount on the standing charge. The paperless and dual fuel discounts are added on afterwards as an adjustment.

I suppose I'm making an assumption about the rest of the big six, but they are the ones with the masses of customers on SVR's many of which will still be on paper bills, so they certainly have the infrastructure in place to provide them.

When it comes to the smaller suppliers, with their thin margins to undercut the big boys I'd expect savings from offering online access only to be low hanging fruit, and paper bills to be unusual at that end of the market.

If you compare energy suppliers at the Citizens Advice Bureau then it clearly displays if the tariff has a paper bill.

  • Thanks everyone, especially gsmlnx and Raxiel. I have done a quick comparison following the link to the Citizens Advice Bureau by provided by gsmlnx. The third cheapest deal for me is Iresa’s paper bill. The second cheapest is Iresa’s paperless bill. The paper bill deal is listed in my results on Cheap Energy Club but the paperless bill option is not.

I will compare this price to the big six tariff details to see if they offer further discounts for dual fuel, though I’m not sure they will as I chose dual fuel in my original comparison.

Iresa’s paper bill is one pound a month more than the paperless bill. I don’t know if they send out a bill every month. On a fixed tariff I don’t need a monthly bill and my current supplier, British Gas, just sends a statement every few months.

    Thanks again!

You're right Raxiel. Paper bills are available with most of our tariffs. Of those currently on sale, the exception is the Saver Fixed 1 Year version 7. With this tariff, paperless billing is part of the terms of the contract. Earlier versions of this tariff have the same condition.

This is a bit of a new thing for us. Previously, paperless billing has been optional on nearly all of our tariffs. Where it is, customers can opt in/out through our website or an advisor can do this for them. As you say, we knock £5 per year per fuel off bills for going paperless.

To confirm, discounts for paperless billing and dual fuel are shown separately and applied to bills on a pro rata basis. Whereas, for paying with a Monthly Direct Debit, there's a payment adjustment in the form of lower daily standing charges.

Hope this explains Raxiel and have a good weekend.

Huh, fancy that, I've just moved to Iresa and hadn't even noticed they have a paper bill option.

  • Not sure if this has been mentioned already, Sainsbury's Energy part of BG provide bills on all their tariffs free of charge and prices tend to be more competitive than BG. You won't loose any on-line discount.

Most of the smaller suppliers offer a discount or require paperless billing. I believe GB Energy (not sure if this extends to the COOP) offer(ed?) free paper bills.

Haven't they gone out of business?
