Comfortable Car for Bad Back

I drive roughly 90 miles a day and have a sore/ stiff back. Any advice on what cars people have found the most comfortable and also any tips on having the correct posture in the car?

Thanks

  • This is where small SUVs come in to their own, they offer a higher, more upright driving position, my experience was from owning a Qashqai for 3 years however, many of the others get good feedback.

I bought a VW Fox 1.2 petrol 10 years ago with this as the main criterion as I, at the time, drove on very poor bumpy C roads 25 miles to work. The seat has goodish support. My MIL now has it and she's 90 with various age-related issues. She has no problem driving it, eg getting in and out. I bought another for me 5 years ago and I now drive 54 miles a day for work. It has a good high cabin and height adjustable driver's seat. I saw an article a few years ago that adopting a more laid back seating posture is better for backs. I therefore tilt the back a fair bit. With the high seat driving position this is not an issue. There are still good low mileage examples out there. I would have gladly bought another new one this year, but sadly no longer in production. Very few reliability issues, but may have been lucky? They've both done 52k.

Heated rear seats are great for back ache as well

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • A Volvo. Every single one I've owned has been incredibly comfortable. 500+ mile days with no aches or pains at the end. I get out feeling as comfortable as when I got in, no matter how long sitting down.

If you're driving & suffer a stiff & sore back, which I do frequently, have you tried a TENS machine? You can use it whilst driving & it may ease the pain/discomfort.

  • Volvo (not sure about the small models) or Saab, though most large cars (no not Vectra Insignia Mondeo) are better in this regard.

I'd have to agree with Volvo. They cars themselves are pretty boring, especially the V40 but the seats are the best in the business.

Not a great deal of help for the driver though!

you sure, the Vauxhall Insignia SRI we had came with an approved orthopaedic drivers seat as standard, best part of the car, surprised they didn't make more of a very useful selling feature. Ours was a 2011, not sure if they still do it.
