A 2,000-acre hill farm in Swaledale is Amanda Owen’s daily workplace, where she oversees a herd of 1,000 sheep (and her nine children with farmer husband Clive). It’s an incredible lifestyle, recounted in her book, A Year in the Life of the Yorkshire Shepherdess, which recently came out in paperback. In the book Amanda describes the age-old cycles of the farming year and the constant challenges she and her family face, whether it’s being cut off in winter or tending her flock on some of the country’s highest, wildest moors.
