I can confirm that you can in fact drive a Honda Civic on the motorway !

    :)

I think the OP was unsure if the 1.4 would be suitable for motorway driving, however, why wouldn't it be suitable?

I cannot think of any cars that are not suitable for motorway driving, apart from maybe Del Boy's 3 wheeler !

Every car manufactured since the 1970's will be OK for motorways and will break the speed limit.

Waiting for someone to remind me of a car that i have forgotten :)

A couple from the 60's maybe? Several from the 50's.

As others have said, any car will be OK on the motorway. You might want to avoid something like a 1.0 but certainly 1.4 will be fine.
I’d recommend petrol as the tide is turning quickly against diesels and you don’t know what might be round the corner.
Other than that, there is a lot of choice! Go for something with a reputation for reliability (everyone has their opinions, but there are plenty of surveys available if you google) and not too unusual so repairs are easy and cheap. And take someone knowledgeable with you to view cars.

Thanks for everyone for taking the time out to reply .

I was warned off diesels in this price range due to the amount of things which could go wrong which would wipe out any savings I make on the MPG .

Or would it better to buy a diesel and use the £450 I save on fuel (plus £100 road tax) to pay for any repairs which need doing .
  • If you buy smart you won't need to put money towards things going wrong.
Do you know a mechanic that could come with you when you're looking at cars and give it a bit of a check out before committing?

I do short journeys and have a diesel. You just need to choose a car thats been looked after and not neglected. Choose a good one and service it before the max limits and it should stay good.

Manufacturers service interval are a maximum not a target to see if you can get it in with less than a mile to spare.

If you have a brand new car and its going when its 3 years old then you can afford to neglect the servicing. If you want a good reliable car to last longer then you service it more often.

    It works for me.
