Placement of new gas meter / living room ?
Options
We live in a ground floor council flat
With a further 2 floors above us
On each landing there are 2 flats so that there are 6 flats. In each block
The national grid are in the process of doing major replacement of all gas pipes outside the properties
The outside area has all gullys as they prepare for the new gas installations
We found out yesterday that NG have been instructed by our council to install the new gas meter in our front living room with the pipe coming from it behind to go up the wall and across the wall 3inches from the ceiling
Our old meter is in a store cupboard near our front door along with the electric meter
I have hit the roof as we had no information from the council about the placement of the gas meter
And I thought that this was a primitive way of placing a meter in a living area ?
The council have said they won't put it on the outside wall in a box beacuase of safety / tampering etc
What is the regs or safety of placement of gas meters in living rooms
Our living room. Is 8ft x 11 ft with no vents
Just p v c windows
Thanks

AFAIK there is no reason why a gas meter should not be in a living room. In the last 3 flats I've lived in it's been under the living room window in the recess. No vents are required, but gas pipes must not run through sealed voids or boxing-in.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

I see hundreds and hundreds of gas meters in living areas. Whole streets have a set up like this. They are usually in one of the corners.Electric meters too. I cannot see your problem. They are boxed in and you won t know its there. I m a meter reader by the way. I must have read over 20 today at least in the main rooms, behind the TVs in the council estate I worked in today. Fuss over nothing IMOThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
