Repair or replace boiler.?

Hi there.
We have a Worcester 28i boiler which is approaching 14 years old. The heating pipework and radiators are much older, probably 30 or even 40 years old but have been power flushed relatively recently.

The expansion vessel needs replacing and the one person who's been to look says it's not worth replacing, they never work properly afterwards and we should get a new boiler.

My question is - is it worth getting someone who will replace the pressure vessel or do they really not work after replacement..?

I'd rather keep our system going because in next 3-5 years we're hoping to build an extension which would require relocating the boiler.
If we are better off changing the boiler, would it cause problems to attach it to a very old system, and to relocate it, install new rads etc in a few years time?

years ago we got a new expansion vessel for a Worcester 350, it worked perfect afterwards.
It went again recently, must be at least 10 years and probably more since the expansion vessel was replaced, this time because the boiler was 20 years old we could not get the part so have just replaced it with a new Worcester Boiler,
edited just to add- we have lived here for 35 year and the existing pipework has not been altered we have replaced some radiators to install larger though
  • On you tube there is a video of a guy adding a basic accumulator to a boiler when the internal one had failed, thinking of this for our boiler as I think ours is on it's way out
  • Nice simple repair. Worcester still supply ALL the parts for the 28i. Don't chuck it
  • Repair it the old WB are much better than the new ones, or as post #3 you could fit an external one
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

It's very rarely economical to replace a boiler if parts are still available. Was the person who came to look at it employed by British Gas by any chance?

  • just had done an expansion vessel and new prv on a 28i in a rental property, cost me £170 (parts were £100) and running great again. Parts needed included washer pack, they are not standard washers and need replacing when changing parts. Well worth repairing, good boilers.
