Help - European cover and breakdown beyond 90 days

Calling all fellow tourers , campervaners and motor homers. I have a classic VW campervan that I intend to tour Europe with this year. My current insurers only cover me abroad with European breakdown for a max of 90 days.

Can anyone recommend an insurer that will do 180 days + without the need to return to the Il? Is it better to get insurance and breakdown separate or together? Also for personal travel insurance who do people recommend as most limit you to trips no longer than 30 days.

Your advice would be most appreciated. :)

Is it better to get it together. Depends on the price and the actual cover you choose.

I presume you wont want cover that will bring your vehicle back to the UK and give you a little hatchback for 24 hours and then leave you to fend for yourselves.

  • Hi forgotmyname yes I don't want to have to return to the uk in the event of a break down.
  • Rizzomena - you don't say how old you are.

If over 50 Saga offer 365 days cover as standard - that's who our Motorhome is insured with.

You're going to be hunting. We did 18mo on the continent in an '80s VW T25, and the only people who would quote us were Swinton's motorhome brand, Safeguard, but they wouldn't give us breakdown cover. For that, we went ADAC.

Saga might, if you fit their demographic (we don't). Specialist motorhome insurers might, but some are sniffy about campers, others about older vehicles.

Get a VW mag, and a motorhome mag, and start ringing around insurers and breakdown providers. Good luck.

We are with Comfort for our motorhome insurance, off the top of my head I think it is 180 days, definitely more than 90 and for £60 extra we get breakdown cover.
For travel insurance we get it through our bank account with nationwide but you pay to extend the cover, we paid £120 for 120 days cover which is what we needed. But as long as we are back to the uk we could do another 120 day trip at no extra cost.
  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions will be looking into all recommendations.
