I have seen a few people with lakes in property magazines and I saw one I really liked at the weekend. It has some beautiful planting around it and the owners had built a little wooden jetty.
I have space to do one and am wondering if it would make a good 'soakway' for excess rainwater but am not sure if it would be allowed with planners.
Just rambled musings at the moment but would love to know from others any positives and negatives of having one.

The most up to date regulation from the Town and Country Planning Act 2015, Part 1, Class E stipulates that a client will generally not need planning permission if you meet these key requirements (there are others, but these are the main ones):
The property is not listed, and
The site is within the curtilage of the property, and
You are not in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
Planning permission will be required if:
Your property is listed
You want to build on agricultural land0 -
Thats helpful thankyou but it looks like i've fallen at the first hurdle as I live in an AONB.
I have a natural pond on the land so may look into whether I can extend that instead.0 -
Being in an AONB doesn't rule it out. Lakes and large ponds have landscape and wildlife value. Just think of Capability Brown!
You might need to jump through the hoop of getting a report done from an environmental perspective to show the council how beneficial the lake and associated planting would be.

Thankyou I will go and do some research.0
