Groupon Voucher - misadvertised??

I am seeking advice on how to seek redress for a poorly worded Groupon Voucher.

The Voucher is advertised as a two night stay arriving Sunday to Friday.

Due to work commitments I can only go on a weekend so I checked availability with the merchant's website and there were multiple Friday to Sunday stays available on the weekends I could stay.

I went ahead and booked the voucher.

I have since tried to formally book the voucher with the merchant to be told that they Voucher cannot be used to stay on a Saturday.

I have messaged Groupon and they are refusing to refund the voucher as this is in the terms and conditions. This has already been escalated to management and they are refusing to budge.

But this is contradictory to the wording on the voucher which states "valid arriving Sunday to Friday". I just thought it meant you couldn't arrive on a Saturday.

Unfortunately the voucher was paid part in groupon vouchers and part by card due to taking a refund on another Groupon a few months ago when a merchant did not honour that deal. In hindsight I should have asked for a card refund then but that opportunity has passed.

I am therefore unable to get the full refund via my card issuer and would still be out of pocket.

I have tried to look up advice but struggling to find something relevant.

Any thoughts as to my standing are welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks

Not mis-advertised at all, you have even said it was advertised as a Sunday - Friday voucher.

The hotel may well have availability for Friday & Sunday night stays but they will be more expensive nights as opposed to Sunday - Thursday night stays. You will often find that groupon will sell two price bands of vouchers for these deals whereby the Friday arrival night is more expensive.

Hotels tend to go through Groupon for non weekend deals as they tend to be less busy.

  • I have messaged Groupon and they are refusing to refund the voucher as this is in the terms and conditions.

    And is it?
  • The voucher reads "two night stay valid ARRIVING Sunday to a Friday" for a two night stay. I took that to mean you could arrive on a Friday.

I didn't think it meant you couldn't arrive on a Friday because the voucher terms say valid Sunday to Friday. I thought you could arrive Friday and stay the two nights. Otherwise surely the wording should have read "valid arriving Sunday to Thursday"

It is contradictory with the smaller terms but I didn't realise this until it was too late. I just read it as you couldn't arrive on a Saturdays as the huge writing on the voucher says Arriving Sunday to Friday.

I had neve booked hotels on groupon before so I believed the wording.

Is the deal still live on Groupon? Can you provide a link?

I am almost sure that when I purchased the voucher it said in the headline "valid arriving ... " although this now appears changed.

That is the wording on my actual voucher in "My Groupons" and also if you click "buy" you will see the wording still on the options they present you to buy.

I am using the App so can't comment on the wording on the website which I know can sometimes be different.
