Mercedes W211 Rear Discs and pads

Can anyone advise how much labour would be for replacing discs and pads on the rear?

Is there any advise on other parts required?

  • Done quickly in a fully equipped workshop, could probably be done in 45 minutes.

Done properly, would probably take an hour.

I changed the rear discs and pads on my 330Ci a couple of weekends ago, and that took me about an hour and a half, including cleaning up and greasing sliders, pumping the pistons out of the calipers, cleaning and greasing, cleaning up the handbrake mechanism and adjusting, and the discs and pads themselves, as well as drinking a couple of cups of coffee.

BeenThroughItAll - how much would you consider as fair payment for 1.5hrs of work? (That has been carried out as thoroughly as you did on your vehicle).

Obviously you have been charged too much in your humble opinion. Different dealerships in different locations.

Back street as low as maybe £40 per hr London Main dealer £200 per hr ?

The only local garage I'd trust to work on my car charges £38.50/hr - and that's not untypical in the area.

So if I were to pay someone else to do it, I'd not expect to pay more than £60 or so plus parts - but I'd expect the job done properly for that.

For a quick-n-dirty change, I'd not pay more than an hour's labour.

The question you ask is totally arbitrary - you need to ask the person doing the work how long it'll take and their hourly labour rate; you may consider £100 reasonable, whereas I would not.
  • What model W211, pre or facelift.

Make sure if its pre facelift that the person knows exactly what they are doing, this is SBC equipped and nothing like an ordinary braking system, a system that has to be carefully shut down before anyone works on the brakes for safety.
  • It is the pre facelift model and I understand that StarBenz is required to shut down SBC, although most side street mechanics just disconnect the batteries (don't open the doors).

I would do the job myself but unfortunately tools and flat ground are a problem. So just looking for an honest amount to pay for the job.

Assuming no nasties discovered, no bolts sheer off and the caliper's arn't seized then an hour and a half labour should cover it, probably an hour at a Merc indy with STAR.
It won't be the first time that when discs are removed they find the parking brake shoes have got deep gouges due to rust build up on the brake drum or are falling apart (this is a Volvo S60/V70 regular story), so be prepared for the phone call, shoes can take another half to an hour to fit and not always carried by the usual factors.
