Lack of updates certianly can cause issues.

My mother has a, let's be generous and say 1/2 meg connection.

She called me as she was having servere slow internet.

Problem was because she never leaves the machine on it needed updates, and these updates were strangling any other internet use.

Pre W10 it seemed updates would be thottled properly when doing other things. I guess they never though to check it on a slow connection.

No 5h1t !! Fred Flintstone had faster internet than that !! ;)

I hate the way companies are leaning to put more and more pressure on the end user to have massive internet pipes.
Example, I bought the latest call of duty game for xbox one and BEFORE i could even play it, i had to download a 39Gig update !!

    !!!!!! !!?

They should just include another disk, or finish the game properly before release..

And as for W10 updates, M$ should periodically wrap up all these stupid updates into a service pack and post it free to all its users on disk if requested.

I hear ya...Mini-Gun#2 had exactly that scenario on all the games he got for xmas... bl00dy pathetic. It's not only the internet connection that becomes an issue, it's also that storage requirements (esp for games) are going through the roof

Well if you put their computers back to Windows 7 then there's over 1GB of updates to do on a Win7 SP1 install assuming of course that Windows Update actually works and you don't have to go and apply one of the fixes first so it doesn't just sit there on "searching for updates" for a couple of days.

Windows 10 update works fine but if its an old version and needs updating to build 1607 then that is a 4GB update so its going to take a while at 6mbps. I usually shove an installation DVD of build 1607 in the ones that do and perform an upgrade as its faster.

  • Why not just show them how to manually check for updates and tell them how to start it going before they go out for the day or whatever?

Yep, and with Teamviewer, assuming the bandwidth is available, a few car miles have been saved.
PS. just tried the metered connection today (the wifi version rather than ethernet "fix"); this will be too much trouble for the average punter as the message that gets displayed is gobbledygook; looks like the best option is "keep it on overnight at least one night" and use of Teamviewer.

In my experience even manually checking for updates doesn't work if W10 update is sufficiently broken.

I've resorted to manually downloading the latest Cumulative updates form the Microsoft Update Catalog, until I can do something to fix it longer term, so at least the majority of fixes get applied.

Blimey - harsh words Strider - had a bad night mate? Lack of updates was one issue and I'll park the "are updates needed or not" argument off to one side.

"Strong words" is saying they're "on their last legs", my current PC was custom built (by me) in 2009 and with a GFX card upgrade it's still a real beast of a machine at 8 years of age!!!!
By "beast" I mean it runs even the most demanding of modern PC games, copes with top end video editing software and even a number of industry standard 3d CAD programs.

It's winds me up when people have something that is a couple/few years old and they're claiming it's "on it's last legs", whether that's their PC, or their car, TV or various white goods, people are just so corrupted by consumerism and by this throw away culture we have in the west.

I don't sugar coat things, I don't mean to offend either, but I say what I see and some people just don't like it.

One of the "on its last legs" W10 computers is only 6 years old - you're right - perfectly usable; but its taken 2 (elapsed) days of W10 updates - on a reasonable internet connection - to get it fit for purpose. (main problem was that it was originally upgraded from an already high-program count W7 install; if it was one of mine I'd have clean installed it; but I generally give the customer what they ask for).
