    Depending on the land left to the side of the extension, the extension can be built under permitted development and a subsequent planning application put in to split the house into two.

    Not that bonkers if you have the cash and relevant planning advice. Turning a house into a terrace doesn't devalue a house as much as having a free building plot on the side adds. There's no immediate planning reason why it can't be done, even if it upsets the neighbours.

    I don't think I'd be doing it with friends, but admire the OPs imagination. At the very least, they've found a great extension opportunity.
