A worry about claiming for my laptop...

Hey all,
I took out a student contents policy a month ago and it covered portable computers and everything (IE my laptop).
And one month in and I was charging my laptop and went to pick it up, unaware that the wire was caught on the corner of a desk, dropped it and the screen broke.
My worry is that this was the first time I had used the computer in months as I only need it for uni work. So the thing had not been so much as turned on in a month or three.
I am worried about claiming in my first month of the policy and I was told that I may have problems since there is no proof that I didn't break the laptop during those months of inactivity, before I took out the policy.
So will they honour my claim or should I avoid claiming to preserve my no-claims?
Worried and thankful in advance,
Drew

Just be honest and if it is worth claiming ie over excess then that's what insurance is for. They may offer to pay for repair0
