Hi DJC - can you explain a little more about the "trouble"? There is usually a period after a heart attack that insurers will want to pass before they quote terms. Usually once back at work (or otherwise "fit") for six months provides the comfort that the high risk of a second attack has passed. As four years has passed, whilst you will be asked to pay a higher premium that someone who hasn't had a heart attack, you should be able to obtain life insurance. If you are happy to share some more personal information - age, smoking status, any other relevant medical history, height/weight, I might be able to provide a bit more guidance as to what you might expect. Hope this helps.

Mainstream providers will look for a very long period before offering cover. However, there are specialist insurers that deal with IFAs that handle high risk/poor health cases. However, be prepared for the premiums to reflect the level of risk.

Based on that info, I'd expect most insurers to offer cover. L&G have made a recent change to their underwriting in that they won't offer cover to anyone under the age of 50 following a heart attack, but others should be ok. It will be dependent on which vessel was stented and the degree of blockage within the vessel, but even so.

Personally, I'd have expect a premium increase of around 125-150% on a case like this ie. A £20 premium becoming a £45-50/month premium.

  • D, just to say, I agree with Weighty1's assessment. I'd recommend you contact a protection broker - they'll take details, and call a few firms to get an idea of underwriting before making formal applications. It should be pretty straightforward, but regrettably you will be charged an extra premium, but should get the cover you need.
