van insurance

I've recently bought a small van for recreational reasons and as I'm not a registered business, naturally had to pay the VAT on the vehicle. However, when I'm trying to insure the vehicle, I'm being quoted extortionate amounts to have business cover to use it when I'm at work as it's a commercial vehicle. My previous insurance added business use onto my policy free of charge...... My issue is that if I were a registered business I would not have had to pay the VAT on the vehicle, I can evidence this has been paid and as such, despite it being a van, it is only used, as my car used to be, for social and domestic use. I'm currently being quoted as much as £350 extra to have business cover added to my policy. Feel like I'm being penalised because I've bought a vehicle which suits my lifestyle......
Has anyone got any experience of this ? and do you know where to get a decent van insurance deal from ?

You misunderstand the vat issue.
Everyone has to pay including businesses. A business may deduct vat paid from vat received before sending the money in to the govt, but they don't get goods free of vat that are subject to vat0 -
The issue with vans is that people will often ask you to pick things up and drop things off etc.
Adding business use may also add to that train of thought. You could have bought a car based vehicle the same size and saved yourself the problems.
You chose a vehicle to suit your lifestyle, there were probably lots of other choices that were not vans though. The insurance company didnt force you to choose a van or to buy one without checking the insurance costs.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

If you only use it for SDP then why try to add business use? MSE will tell you to save the money and don't pay for cover you don't need!0 -
If you genuinely don't use it for business use, you may find the the Co op or Direct Line will insure it for private use only0
