Hi all

This is a long one so please bear with me.

So I have worked at my compay for 3 years (about 6 months on agency before going full time) and I have applied for most job notices that have gone on the board, all various roles which I know I can do and have been egged on by management to go for. After applying I am lucky if I even get to the interview stage, even though I have worked there for three years.

So just one instance is I applied for an Administrator role in Sept. 2016 and after not hearing back for over 2 weeks I got in touch with HR asking how my application is going and I got the repsonse that they were still going through applications and they will be in touch shortly. Again I waited about a month and then I noticed a new face in the workplace and asked her what role she was doing and she replied 'I am the new administrator from the agency temp-perm'. So I went to my manager to get in touch with HR and ask why I wasn't interviewed and the response he got from HR was 'We were told no and they will get my head of operations to contact me' (although I haven't seen the email I can't see why he would lie to be honest) and to this day I haven't heard anything back regarding this.

I applied for a team leader role in Oct. 2016 and again wasn't interviewed and the two members of staff that got the positions were still on their probationary periods (even though I am sure in my contract it states you have to work your probationery period before being considered for a promotion)

I applied for another team leader role in Jan 2017 after rewriting my entire CV and application form and got to interview stages (albeit with a new manager) and again 1 position was given out to a new member of staff that was on their probationary period and the other was given to an administrator that had no previous shop floor experience.

I went on Paternity Leave at the end of December and I was planning on having two weeks off, I went through all the procedures correctly (MATB1 form, notice etc.) and just before my baby was born I got a letter off HR saying that I will be getting £132 per week whilst off, I didn't have time to contact HR to get this resolved so I took 1 week off and went to HR asking if I could take it on banked hours rather than lose the money, they agreed and everything was hunkey dorey, until someone from management (most likely my supervisor although I can't prove it) logged into my clocking system and changed it from BH (Banked Hours) to PATPAY (Paternity Pay) as management are the only ones that can amend it. I went to HR explaining the situation and they were just as stumped as I was, I asked them to send an emailed to payroll to see if they could work out how much I was being paid and again I have not got a response, that was at the start of January.

I know it sounds like I am moaning and blah blah blah but I just wanted some advice as I don't know where to go or who to speak to, this is just a snippet that I can think of without going into too much detail.

Thanks in advance

It's most likely a lack of communication over the paternity aspect. You were originally on paternity, someone probably thought an error had been made.

As for the promotions, sounds like other people are impressing them more than you. You have no right to be interviewed or offered a promotion. That's not unfair.

If it is just a snippet then why are you still there after 3 years? Can't be that bad of a place to work.

You have applied for a number of internal vacancies and have failed to get any of the roles. That in itself isn't unusual. Bear in mind that to you this is a cumulative situation, but to the people doing the recruitment each job advertised is an individual case. You aren't going to be given a job simply because you've applied for loads of them.
It's not a case of it being just one manager where there may be a personality clash, you have said that one instance involved a new manager. Do you need to look closer to home for the underlying problem? Is your perception of your ability different to that of management?
Whatever the underlying reason, it seems pretty clear that progress opportunities with you current employer are severely limited so you basically have 2 choices. Either accept the fact and continue in your current role or seek alternative employment.
The PL issue is a different thing which requires further action. You need to get back on to HR and state that it was agreed that you would only take one week as paternity leave and need the payroll sorted quickly. As things have dragged on I would be inclined to do that in writing complete with timeline of the dates of the communications you had on the subject.

    Because it's a job.

Thanks for your reply, it's not that I'm bothered about getting the jobs it's just the fact one minute I am good enough to be interviewed the next I'm not. The last interview I had I didn't get it 'because I came across as nervous' as I said I have been there for 3 years, worked every weekend that's been requested, I was in credit of up to 180 banked hours at one point. My point is if I'm not getting them and requesting feedback but not actually getting anything what do I do? I've asked to undergo training and courses as well as coaching but just feels like I am getting fobbed off.

From reading this and the rest of the thread you seem to have no idea what you are doing at your orgainsiation or where you want to be going. I get the impression you apply for roles willy nilly, first an administrator then a supervisor.. so what is it you actually want to do? You also mention that you went from agency to "full time", this doesn't make sense because "full time" refers to the number of hours worked in a week eg part time and full time, so do you actually mean that you were made permanent?
My advice is to spend some time thinking about what you actually want to be doing for work rather than just going for somethkng because its "just a job" if that attitute is anythng like you come across in interviews then I susupect the interviewer is picking up that you are not really interested in the jobs you are applying for. Thinlk about what you want to do and then go for interviews at EXTERNAL companies for a) the practice in order to get feedback and confidence and b) to heklp you figure out what you want to do.

Yes "full time" does mean permanent, I have never gone for a supervisor role as I know I wouldn't get it where as my supervisor on my current department egged me on to go for it as I was practically doing the work just without the title :) What I meant by 'it's just a job' was I've been there for 3 years in the same position.

Clearly management don't agree with you on what your skills are.

Even if you want to call that 'unfair' it's perfectly legal.

This may explain it, they don't want to lose the office Muggins. Your current employer apparently doesn't think you are team leader material. The fact that you think you should have been given a team leader job because you'd been there longer than the person who did get it doesn't help your cause. Clearly your employer doesn't believe in Buggins' Turn.

If someone posted a thread saying "I'm unemployed, I've applied for three jobs in the last year from this one employer but not got past the interview stage" they'd be met with a chorus of "how do you expect to get a job when you've only applied for three jobs from one employer in a year". It's not that much different if you're currently employed. If you think you have the right qualifications to be a team leader, apply to other companies.
  • Have you asked HR if they are able (willing?) to give you any feedback as to your lack of success?
