I have feeling I heard Martin Lewis say that there is a problem with being able to change provider if BG smart meters fitted. Can anyone confirm or reject that. Like a lot of people, coming to end of collective rate, so need to look at new provider.

When you swap supplier then generally the smart bit stops working and you have to read the meter yourself. Also the InHouseDisplay and meter will no longer be updated with the cost of your tariff.

You can switch suppliers at will; however, as you have what is known as a Foundation Stage smart meter (SMETS1) it will not communicate with other suppliers (except for Sainsburys). In other words, you will have to read the meter and pass readings to your chosen supplier.

There is currently an ongoing consultation to decide on how best to integrate SMETS 1 meters into the new Data Communications Company infrastructure.
