Urgently in need of a second job

I'm desperate to find a second job, something I can do at the weekend and during the evenings. I work as a Civil Servant full time but the pay isn't enough for living in London. I don't have experience of doing much else, such as bar work or retail. Can anyone help?
Thanks

As a civil servant, can you re-locate to a cheaper area? If you do manage to find another job (stacking supermarket shelves on Sundays, for example) it should only be a short term solution, or you'll burn yourself out.
Living in London may be fun, but it's not funny if you have to spend all your waking hours working.
Add: Just noticed (from your other post) that you are a home-owner. Do you have room for a lodger?0 -
I have a studio flat, so there is no space for a lodger. I'm trying to get promotion at work but it's impossible as I'm in specialist sector. Where do you find weekend jobs? They seem impossible to come by? I've tried care work, but again I have no experience. Bar work always requires experience too. Where do people get the experience in the first place? I can't sleep at night worrying about this.0

Now the new year has started I am becoming very anxious about my income. My mortgage interest will rise this summer from a two year fixed rate. I work as a Civil Servant in London, and have been for nearly 8 years. My salary is £25K and I am on a yearly 1% pay rise, which amounts to £10 extra per month. Basically I don't earn enough each month to cope with price rises. Is there anything I could do to earn extra? Ideally I need to find a new job, but that could take months, and I don't feel ready yet; internal promotion at work is impossible (tried that last year). I reckon I am about £100-200 short each month. I thought about letting out my parking space as I don't have a car, however I am a leaseholder and the freeholders has already said no (not sure how they would find out as they never visit the property?). I don't really want to get a second job as I would be constantly tired, and my performance might drop in my main job. I'm also not sure how it would work with income tax?
The only thing I can think to do is cut back on socialising and going out. I haven't had a holiday in 5 years as I can't afford one. I'm also on medication to cope with serious anxiety.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
From your post in your other thread, did you follow through and make a statement of affairs to see where your money is going?

I don't think bar work would suit you if you have anxiety issues.
If you're only on £25k in London no wonder you're struggling. Do you have anything tying you to London such as family? If not, have you thought about selling up and moving somewhere cheaper and that way your overall costs should be lower.
Most people usually get experience from when they are teenagers/at uni and work in their part-time at non-skilled jobs like working in a shop/bar work.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly, and I can move and merge threads there. Any views are mine and not the official line of moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Another option may be supermarket work. They are often looking for part time staff and may have hours to suit your availability. I bumped into 2 of my former CS colleagues who are now working in Morissons. One just does 2 x 4 hour shifts per week collecting trolleys. The other works longer hours, but he had left the CS because he didn't need the grief of working there.0

Unless the rules have changed, as a civil servant you may need permission to engage in other employmentIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

The pay is enough but your accommodation is beyond your means. £25,000 isn't enough to maintain a studio flat by yourself in London. You should seriously consider renting it out and moving to a house share.
Working an evening or weekend job on top of a full time professional job is highly likely to burn you out.0 -

That's true of many employers. It is still true for the CS.0 -
Thanks for the advice, I will look into the policy at work about second jobs. I have an interview next week for CS job at a higher grade.0
