Is this collection company trying to con me? End of PCP car deal.

I had a Fiat 500 for four years under PCP deal (pay so much each month then at the end of the period either trade in for a new one, pay the balance, or hand the car back). I handed the car back on the 20th Sept 2016, an inspector came, checked the car, then I handed him the keys, signed a thing and he left. Now I get a letter (a few weeks ago, so four months later) saying that I didn't give him both sets of keys and I owe them £220 odd quid for a new one to be made (and £65 for a scratch on the bumper). I wrote back and said I handed over both sets, check your records, they reply with an electronically generated pdf that has my electronic signature pasted into a box at the bottom, this sheet says 'missing set of keys, £200', which they imply I signed. Now, as it was back in Sept I simply don't remember the details, it was actually emotional and I just wanted it over and done. I *think* I just signed a hand-held device to confirm taking it, I certainly didn't sign a sheet like the one they sent - I'd have noticed the £260 bill! They also said as a goodwill gesture they will waive £65 from the bill, essentially the cost of the scratch. This feels like a con, but I have no documentation to support my claim that I gave both sets of keys back. I KNOW I did, I had both in my hand, I removed the keyrings from them. What shall I do? Collection company is called SMA Vehicle Remarketing.

It comes down to your word against theirs. Tell them that you have not signed anything that accepts there were a missing set of keys.

Sounds to me though you're quite sure of what actually took place at the handover so you may struggle with this one but I'd still persevere either way.
  • What relationship do you have with SMA Vehicle Remarketing? They are owned by British Car Auctions (and I am therefore surprised that you have anything from them citing SMA). I assume they are responsible for disposing of the car on behalf of (I presume) Fiat Financial Services. If you took the PCP through your local Fiat dealer, if is their financial services arm you should deal with - 0344 561 4738. Give them a call and query it, and strongly state your position.

One lesson learnt though - ALWAYS read what you are signing.
