I add some ash and I have a woodburner but wont burn wet wood

Neither will I, that is why I have a heap under a tarpaulin outside waiting so I can uncover it for a couple of dry days and hopefully burn it before washing drying weather comes in.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Lots of good advice here. I can see what the OP means though. I compost most soft growth and garden waste but have 3 big garden refuse bags full of prunings from buddleias, fuschias, willows etc. (Most of them are shredded but I do find it hard work as I have a 'gammy' arm.)
The 'green bin' is still full from Autumn prunings.
The council only collect up to end of October and don't start again until end of March. If they added more collections they would have more compost to sell or maybe that isn't how they work?... I suppose I'll just have to get some help to man-handle them into the car and down to the 'tip' (Bonfires are frowned upon until after 7pm and that's long, slow work too)
Has anyone had any success in asking councils to extend their collection calendar? We're being charged for the first time this year and it would be nice if collections were carried out when they were of most use to the gardener.

Blimey, look on the bright side, we have always been charged for garden waste collections, but the plus is they collect every fortnight, with a break over Christmas, they will take the old Christmas tree though

If tyour council is now charging maybe extend to year? But I guess the cost would reflect this, mine is £68 a year per wheelie bin and buy your own bin, not ideal but wonky legs and the like make this only real option apart from paying a gardener to do it

Odd how different councils have completely different systems. Ours collect garden waste throughout the year (costs about £30 which seems reasonable value)
  • It may seem good value but if you only use the service once or twice a year because you compost most stuff or dont require it often then £30 is expensive

Its optional so if you didn't need it you wouldn't pay for a garden waste bin.
  • Yes its optional but its only good value if you use the service regularly

It would be more useful if the collections dates were changed from our council. Grass cuttings etc are easy to compost in the Summer. Shrub cuttings are more difficult to dispose of. I must admit that sometimes the bin is almost empty in Summer. I suppose that's when I should be feeding them through, although those big bags are in my way and an eyesore until then.
It looks like I should count my blessings, comparing collection charges with other folk. (Although they did introduce it in November with a £5 discount offered if paid before the end of December so no time to raise objections! ;) )
