Who uses YNAB?

Options
Not much in here on Budgeting despite the name. Just wondered how many people had started using YNAB (YouNeedABudget)? I've found it invaluable it getting my finances in check, knowing where every penny is going really allows you to take control of your spending habits...

What is your experience of using it?

    I use pen and paper.
  • I do and have found it invaluable to track where everything is going, identify spending habits and where I should prioritise savings. However I have YNAB4 which by all accounts doesn't bear much of a resemblance to the online version!
Proud to be debt free September 2014. :j

I have been with Ynab since Aug 2014 and have found it extremely beneficial. I had no debt (except small mortgage) before I started but can organise money/save much more effectively with it. I have also stuck with Ynab4. I did trial the online version but much prefer the desktop based one for quite a few different reasons.

  • Well I am using the web based version, perhaps you always like what you are used to? Anyway, I find it pretty intuitive and like the way can be flexible with your spending. I think the web verison also has some updates over the desktop one, ie credit cards and now treated as such, etc.

I used to use YNAB but it ceased to be relevant. I finish every month with a surplus and that surplus is transferred to a savings account, no real need to budget. My expenditure is automatically categorised and fully listed in my CYBG B app although it does have a thing about spending on things costing less than a tenner. Lastly it's treatment of credit cards left me with quite some disagreement: YNAB's goal is to pay them off but I use credit cards as a tool hopefully to my advantage.

One thing that I did retain from YNAB is leapfrogging over a month, i.e. use the income from month 1 in month 3 and so on.

MS Money for me, on a PC only :(
so might not suit the phone only types,
    it's a glorified spread sheet,
with loads of options......if YOU enter all the data.

The way the Web version handles CC is one of the features which I personally dislike. I have no need to budget the money to clear my CC. It has already been budgeted in the relevant category so I know the money is in my account for the transfer once a month. There are various features on Ynab4 which aren't permitted on nYnab (eg. sending pay to the next month). Yes I know there is a way around that but that isn't the point. There is also the risk of 'stealing from the next month'.

I also have a surplus at the end of a month but still find Ynab useful for organising my budget.
