You declined the change in terms. I'm no legal expert, but my view would be to call their bluff. It does sound similar to how parking companies threaten court action, to bully people in to paying, when in reality court will never happen.
If you are truly worried though, enforce the 12 month contract - after all, I assume you were happy with the rates being offered to have gone ahead with it?
Try reading the original post again. OP says they agreed to the change to a 17 month contract, their change to get out was lost when they accepted the change from a 12 month to a 17 month contract. If they had not agreed to the change then they couldn't be bound by it but they did so they can't now go back and try to enforce the 12 month contract.0 -
Hollydays, I already looked at their FB page. It looked little used, little liked, & I couldn't see a lot to be gained from posting on it to be honest, so I didn't bother. Thanks for the thought though. I might reconsider when the dust has settled; I'll have nothing to lose then!
Cardinal Wolsey, yes, I agreed to the 17 month, but their alteration of the contract would have annulled the 12 month at that point either way.
Fosterdog, yes, I missed my window right there. But I didn't realised I needed the window until it had closed. (Joni Mitchell, 'Big yellow taxi' springs to mind. 'Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.')
Yes Cardinal Wolsey, we came to the conclusion that the worst thing that could happen, if we stayed with them, was that we'd get 17 months with a firm we didn't like. No, the rates weren't bad, but like I said, it's the trickery I take issue with. I'd rather pay a bit more than give my business to a firm like that!
We've decided on a way forward. Forgive me if I don't spell it out, best not to show our hand. But I will come back & post on here when it's all over. I'm most grateful for all your support ladies & gents. Thank you.0 -
If you do stay with them for 17 months, then read the contract very carefully. It might be an auto-renewing contract, with a specific process to cancel. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

Hi
Hope you don't mind me contacting you but was wondering if you resolved your issue with UCR as we have just be conned in the same way, they called us, leading us to believe they were from our energy supplier and have just received a letter from them stating they have arranged renewal of our contract from 01/01/2018
Any advice as to how to cancel this contract would be much appreciated0 -
Hi, I can actually give you some good advice and help with this if you like, I’ve had dealings with UCR before.0
