Student loan lived abroad in last 3 years help please

Options
HI,
I moved abroad to Canada with my parents in 2008, I'm a British Citizen with British Passport. I was age 9 at the time. I moved back to the UK in 2016 as soon as I was able to at 17 and now live with my grandparents who are retired.
I applied and was accepted to University, but now I realise I may have a problem with a student loan due to residency requirements.
To qualify the residency I have to have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to applying and I have only been back for 1 year. This seems so unfair as it was not my choice to move to Canada . My parents maintained their home in the UK and will be moving back in 2018 ( 10 years abroad) the move was never permanent for them they just thought it would be a great experience for me and my brother.
I'm really worried now that I wont get a loan to cover my student fees - please can anyone advise or help?

  • Not only the loans but the university may treat you as an overseas student for fees.

I think you will need to speak to the University you have applied to on this. It does look on the surface of things that you will fall foul of the residency rules. This would mean you were not eligible for loans and may be treated as an overseas student.
The worst case scenario is that you would have to defer your application until you do meet the residency rules if the loans would be the only way you could do it.
However, as I say - you will need to talk to the SLC or speak directly the University you applied to. Uni Admissions teams are pretty good.
