Are foundation children entitled to free dinners?

That's the question basically

I have just read somewhere that all foundation children are entitled to this. My child is in Reception and we saw £2.10 for every hot dinner still?

We aren't on any benefits.
Let's be happy!!

See goverment website for further info

    Basically it says...

All government-funded schools must offer free school meals to every pupil in:
    • reception
    • year 1
    • year 2
To provide these meals, we give funding to:
    • local-authority-maintained schools
    • academies
    • free schools
    • alternative provision settings, including pupil referral units (these are establishments that provide education for children who can’t attend a mainstream school)

All reception to Year 2 children are entitled to free school dinners. This is not means tested. Contact your school as parents of R-Y2 children can opt to pay for them too (opt out of the scheme.)
  • Is this in Wales also. We are still paying.

If you are still seeing a charge then contact the meal provider. It took months back when DD was in foundation for them to update the systems. Most of these companies are pretty small and frankly run very much on an amateur basis when it comes to the business side... Ours 4 years later still drives me utterly bonkers!!!

I can confirm this as well, (in England at least).

Our 4 year old is in Reception and has enjoyed free school meals since he started in September last year.

If there was any kind of means testing we would know as we have never claimed any means tested benefits and don't qualify for any either.
    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.
  • Hi Kittencat,

As stated before, all EYFS & KS1 children in LA schools are entitled to Free School Meals.

Are your kids in a private / independent school? That might explain why you have to pay, if so.

  • Thanks guys but apparently as Wales get free breakfast club they don't have to provide free meals.
