even some sheets in excel in windows will not work on excel on macs.
Then not all windows sheets work on other windows versions.
There are often "compatibility packs" that you can download that allow you to open files created in one version of MS Office in another version.
I don't know if they would solve these problems, but maybe worth a look.

Check if your employer is part of the Microsoft Home user program (HUP) which gives employees MS Office for £9.950
