Getmore I think that the TV programmes give the impression it is a long period of time before estates appear on B V and I admit I thought that but as you have said and I found out it only takes a few weeks.

They have had some very recent notified estates on the programs.

it can take a very long time because no one bothers to notify or someone goes on a wild goose chase.

They sit on the list for a while BV let the HH have their go before taking on the administrations.

They have been administering estates notified in 2013, cannot see any that are 2012 they are marked historical which I think means BV solicitors have taken a grant.

    edit:

Should add that the current list is whats still in the system, there will be others that have been taken off because beneficiaries have been found.

Not sure if there are historical records that are public of the daily list so those that went on and got taken off can be found.
Might need a monitor period to get a better picture of the DOD->notify period.
If I get time I will do an analysis of the current CSV.

edit: I found a paid for site that keeps full records aimed at HH.

OK I have had a look at the list and done some Analysis.
    latest list is here
    https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/unclaimed-estates-list
(at the bottom it says when last updated so you can tell when the new one comes in)

Each estate gets a BV no. and it appears these are allocated in some order starting with what looks like a year code.
It has not always been like this, but it seems for the last few years this has been the system.

There are gaps in the numbers and some added early in a year have previous years codes this suggests that BV get a notification give it a number and do some screening before adding to the list later.

Judging by the BV No. and date added this can be some time.
There is one entry for 2017 that in sequence would have been added around 17 Jan was added 2 Feb and some older ones that look to be over a year out of sequence.

Working off the 16/2/2017 list with a total of 10,969 entries.

When BV have done a case they mark it as historic so we lose the date of entry to the list. Removing all those that BV have had marked historic we get down to 1,629 which is quite manageable.

The oldest of those is 2013 which seems to be the year that BV are currently picking them off the list.

No. of days to get on the list from DOD.

    16 shortest time
    9137 longest time(DOD 1990 added 2015, says DOB 1967 so 23!)
    725.4 Average

    69 lower 10%(10% 163, notified 69 days or less )
    129 Lower quartile.(ie 25 % notified in 129 days or less
287.5 Median (ie 50% get notified in 287 days or less)
    744 Upper quartile.(ie 25% take 744 days or longer)

49 is the average of the lower 10%
79 is the Average of the lower quartile.
139 is the average of the lower 1/2.

The most common informant are Councils then Banks and Hospitals solicitors, I suspect individual notifications details may be held back.

Some are on the list because they are partial intestate so already have executors/administrators.
  • A most interesting analysis for which many thanks. I can't help thing that some of the raw data is suspect though. I assume that once an estate ha been claimed it is removed? The time between death and notification is, I assume, a matter of chance. If a person is in a caring facility of some kind then it may be known that there are no relatives but this can't be universally true. All in all rather a sad situation.

Some of the data does look a bit off like there is a DOD in 2018 but mostly it looks ok for this particular type of analysis, gap between DOD and getting on the list.

Remember this list is those that are falling through all the cracks and remain* "lost", some are marked as probate obtained contact..... and some are partial intestacy.

can't remember of the top of my head, but how many public health funerals a year?
A subset of those will be Intestate no know relatives and most of the informants seem to be councils.

Could look to see if there is a correlation between informant and dates.

1/2million people die each year and probably around 400-500 end up on the list around 0.1%, still a lot but some of those will be sorted.
2014 it looks like around 240 are left.
1017 100 so far so on target for 600
I need to see if there is somewhere that has an archive of the list data free. BVD have one link that gets updated daily no archive as far as I can tell.
Its a shame they share the Historic flag with the Date of publication as that would give a bigger dataset to work from.

Any estates where the Bona Vacantia division (BVD) no longer has an interest, for example, when a claim to an estate has been admitted, will be removed daily. Estates where the 30 year time limit from the date of death has expired are also removed.

15 got added 16th, no new ones today 17th and 16 have been removed, could check which ones...

eg Betty Sheldon Watson DOD 04/02/2004 ( so not a 30y time out)

I meant to follow this up with an update on those added on the 15 and 16th of Feb. to see how many and how long it took for them to get picked up but forgot so we only have those left on today's list 26th MAy 2017(none added today)

    date.....added..left
    15/02/2017 8 5
    16/02/2017 15 4

might be worth another check in a few months time
