I have max £5k to spend on an automatic hatchback car. Will mainly be used as a weekend town car in London and weekends away to the coast.

I will be a family car so needs it to be able to hold a pram etc in the boot.

Can you help me with make/model/age suggestions?

Should I look at an Astra? Golf? Focus? Something Japanese? Thanks!

dad has a skoda fabia 1.6 auto 2010 35,000 on clock he paid £4,000 cash last year for it, its not the dsg gearbox but the old style torque converter which is more reliable but more heavy on the fuel around town, he does not do much milage so ist too fussed about mpg etc...

Alfa 147 Selespeed - £500 to buy and £4500 for subsequent repairs

And I'm being flippant - there are over 6,000 cars fit your criteria on Autotrader - can you narrow your criteria down a bit

Panda, seems i cannot say just Panda, so what about a Fiesta instead?

Or a old Bentley, Ideal automatic towncar and you will really enjoy the trip to the coast.

Waft past the plebs in their Panda's and Fiesta's with barely a whisper from the engine or road noise.

The Panda does not have a proper autobox, but a horrible (imho) jerky electro-mechanical semi-automatic set up.

Ford Fusion if you can find one. Brilliant little car and more than enough space in boot for buggy etc.

(I had one, then my dad finally my mil has one too). :)
  • thanks, never heard of a fusion. Any other ideas?

Merc E class. Get any engine from 2.6 upwards and feel special. Make sure it has leather. Enjoy.

Parents bought a Fusion, they hated it so much they traded it in for a Golf with a massive loss. They still have the Golf now.

You can get a Kia Ceed auto still within its 7-yr warranty. Pram fits fine boot.

Also, check the price of the car when it was new. If you can't afford that price you can't afford to repair the car when things will go wrong as price of repair is proportional to its original price and has no relation to price you pay to buy it used :)
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
