Travel Insurance & Sharm El Sheikh Holiday Cancellation

Hi all,

in April 2016 I booked a 14 night holiday to stay in Sharm El Sheikh in August 2017 with Thomson, for my family. We arranged travel insurance (policy type: Ultimate Premier Group Idol inc ESF) with Holiday Extras.

Fast forward to this year and just a few days ago Thomson have cancelled the holiday due to FCO advice to avoid all but essential travel to the area. So it meant we had to rebook a new holiday, this time to Cape Verde, but it was more expensive as when we originally booked last year there were various discounts and offers on at the time. Plus holiday prices have gone up due to people not travelling to Egypt now.

Anyway, my question(s) is this: What happens to our Egypt travel insurance, and can we make a claim, if any, on our travel insurance, if so, on what basis? Or do you get any other kind of compensation?

I understand that the insurance could just be 'gone' now, but I hate the idea that we bought insurance to cover us for unexpected eventualities, and it is suddenly redundant.

BTW I have already made contact with Holiday Extras, but the person I spoke to didn't know what happens next and I was therefore told that someone would get back to me in a few days. He suggested over the phone that I might be able to transfer the insurance to the Cape Verde trip, but a quick look online shows that it's cheaper to insure than Egypt.


Sorry for the rabbling, I've never been in this situation before and would like to know what my options are, if any before the insurance company get back to me.

    Did Thomson refund the full price of the original holiday? if not did you claim off your holiday insurance?
    Holiday Extras might be able to explain if the insurance can be transfered.

    Yes, Thomson gave us the option of either a full refund or transfer the deposit to a new holiday. We transferred the deposit to the new holiday.

    The insurance company said its an extra £47 to transfer the insurance to the new holiday. I'm waiting to see what they say about a claim.

    If you are planning any other holidays within the next 12 months it will probably be cheaper to go with a standalone insurer rather than one provided by Holiday Extras ;)
