You want basics that you can do cheap simple filling meals with.
If I was starting from scratch I would buy:
Baked bean
Tinned tomatoes
tinned sweetcorn
Tinned meat/fish - corned beef, tuna etc.
Pasta
Rice
Also some herbs and spices:
salt
pepper
garlic salt
italian herbs
curry powder
oxo cubesZebras rock0 -
my basics would include= potato, pasta and rice. Fruit and fresh veg.
Bread and butter. Eggs and cheese. Meat.
I would also be quick to buy a veg steamer and George grill for healthy living. The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
Who are you cooking for and when will you next be doing a shop?
My food cupboard necessities include:
Salt
Peppercorns
Herbs & spices
Veg oil
Olive oil
Vinegar, both malt and wine
Plain flour
SR flour
Rice
Pasta
Coucous
Quinoa
Dried peas, beans, chick-peas and soup-mix
Tinned tomatoes
Tomato puree
Sun-dried tomatoes
Olives
Tins of fish: tuna, sardines, herrings, mackerel
Peanut butter
Tahini
Jam, marmalade, lemon curd
Marmite
Stock cubes
Vegeta
However, there may be things that you can't live without that I don't ever eat. Only you know what's necessary and useful or completely superfluous and a waste of cupboard-space..0 -
Thank you for your replies
Good list kathrynha, I didn't think of tinned meat/fish. We are ok with herbs, spices and stock atm.
I already have a george grill good advice and a slow cooker and a hotplateno steamer but then I've never used one. We have enough fresh stuff in the house to last a week or two and extra bread in the freezer.
Hi BitterAndTwisted there are two adults and a toddler and I hope to do a shop end of this week. What do you do with Quinoa? I've only ever had it in Tabouleh
I had a quick look at Approved Foods to see if there were bits that I could stock up on but there's a lot to go through!Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck

I use quinoa in pretty much the same way as you'd cook rice or couscous. Being a non-meat-eating type this stuff is useful as it's very nutritious and high in protein. Tasty too0

For me having plenty of baking items in so cocoa, butter, baking powder, flour, oats, choc drops and plain chocolate is a must so never run out of sweet treats and good cold/rainy weather activity. Also ingredients for salt dough so cheap bag salt.
Then meat, sausages, veggie mince and chicken in the freezer all portioned up so no waste. Frozen green beans and peas for when fresh running low. Tinned toms, beans, sweet corn and spaghetti. Pasta, rice and cous cous. Stock, herbs and spices plus fresh basil (use loads in pizza sauce, pasta sauce etc) peppers, courgette, garlic, onions and mushrooms to make big batch of pasta sauce to be portioned up in freezer. Part bake baguettes to funk up homemade soup night with cheese and ham. Lentils (red and green), chickpeas and other tinned beans means I always have soup, veggie cottage pie and veggie chilli ingredients. Tomato pur!e as use often. Plenty of cereal and a carton if long life milk for the day when I forget we were running low - happens often. Concentrated juice. Potatoes.Happiness is wanting what you have...0 -

Hi,
I would imagine everyone's is different. For us its Uncle Bens microwave rice, risotto, packet pasta, proper pasta and Bisto Cheese Sauce.
Aldi's stackers and pretend nacho's
Cheese, cherry tomatoes and dried fruit.
For other people, the first part of our cupboard would be utter carp.
I would say it depends what you usually end up running out of, then nipping to your local shop to buy and coming out £10 lighter. That's what you want to stock up on.0 -
two threads that might be useful
sorry the forum won't let me post links for some reason, but the threads will come up if you search (Advanced search and search titles only)
