Parcel Delivery

A question about the parcel delivery.

People from this forum always warn sellers that there is a risk to accept the buyer's courier to collect the item when buyers agree to make a payment vai paypal and send their own courier.

How about in GumTree? If buyer views the item and pays cash after viewing, then he sends his courier to collect it. Are there risks that the buyer would tell me the item not delivered afterwards?

Well you're hardly likely to give them back the cash in these circumstances are you? So there wouldn't be a problem. Any issues would lie between the buyer and the courier company, who presumably would have a record of what they'd picked up from where - just make sure you have documentation from the courier that they've picked up the item.

It seems that the buyer wants to make a payment via paypal or bank transfer rather than paying cash due to the long distance travelling.

So, it may be a risk to me? especially, if there are any damages made by the courier.

Then the same issues arise as any sale on ebay- paypal has the same rules regardless of where it is used.

However accepting a bank transfer, and not sending until the day after payment is received will be fine. Just make sure your bank clearly shows it is a bank transfer, if you don't know how to check then phone the bank and ask.

Be careful of Gumtree Scams, we have a couple of items on Gumtree & keep getting these type scams daily, where they try & get £560 via Moneygram for a FAKE paypal email telling me "I have Funds of £xxxx.xx"
Great! please consider it sold and cancel every other appointment regarding it,i am buying it as gift for my son that just graduated from the college and i am ready to pay your full asking price, i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with the condition i will be glad if you can get back to me with some pics if available, sadly i won't be able to come for the inspection and pick up due to my present condition now,but i want you to be rest assured as i will arranging for the pick up agent who will be inspecting it and get all thing taken care at your preferred location.

At the moment and my only quickest payment option is PayPal, its safe fast and secure and i will be responsible for the PayPal transaction charges so you can get your expected amount.I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible?I have also contacted my courier who will come for the pick up and deliver it to my place after the whole fund has been cleared into your account and he will handle everything for me. I look forward to hear from you with the information below.

    Your PayPal e-Mail Address
    Full name:
    Firm Price:
    Postal Code for pickup:

P.S You can alternatively get back to me with your bank details if you don't have paypal so that i can transfer the money to you from my paypal to your bank account

    Await your reply

Am glad to inform you that i have already made the payment! PayPal said that they have sent you a confirmation email so kindly check the inbox, spam or junk folder of your email as I sometimes get the confirmation there (tkpeters) I had a little issue with the agent they said they can only schedule the pick up date and time after they receive their pick up fee in their head office via money gram, but due to my condition now i'm unable to get to a outlet to send it. I added the £520 they charged for the pick up and £40 for the money gram charges, you will receive the total sum of £8,560

You'll send £520 to them via money gram today and here is the details needed for the transfer below:

    Surname : MIN
Address : 13 Suhao Building Nanxin Road
    State : Beijing
    Zip Code: 100024

I will need the full address of where it will be picked up now,as my pick up agent will contact you to book a pick up time after they have received payments but they will have to book a time that is convenient for you

Gumtree can be very scammy, always think through what you are doing before you do it and don't be blinded by the money.

The usual trick is to promise a bank transfer, then send an email pretending to be from your bank saying funds will show on your account once you supply tracking details.

  • Thanks for all of your advice.

I definitely got the scammer. The buyer was so keen to buy my item on GumTree and would like to get the deal today, but strongly requested to send his courier for collection. I simply replied to him that I only accepted Cash payment after he had viewed the item at my place. Then he could arrange his courier to collect it afterwards. I also addressed to have a record of his courier company of the item delivery, in case there was a risk of any damages/lost during delivery. Since then, I haven't heard from him.

It has been very good to read all of the selling advice and tips in their forum. It does help me a lot as a first time seller.
So far I managed to sell a few big items with Cash on collections.

Wifes friend had a £2000 cheque sent for a £200 item. Buyer said said dont worry i trust you , just send the item and deduct your costs and we can arrage to refund the rest.

Luckily she spoke to my wife and she told me, i had to call her quickly to say dont do it. The cheques likely to be fake or will be reported stolen after you had sent the goods and the refund of extra money will be in a way that your not covered. So your going to lose £1800 and the item and even risk your bank account for depositing a fake/stolen cheque.

If the buyers paying cash, you want the £ notes in your hand. Otherwise wait for a genuine buyer.
If they really want it they WILL travel to get it, or arrange a courier who will pay you at the door with cash.
