Quotemehappy.com problem

Hi all

So my grandad is trying to get insurance for his new car and QMH is the cheapest option, the problem is that he has got 25+ years driving experience and 19 years NCD's. He has had a look online and it looks like that he will need to upload his proof of NCD's which after not driving for around a year and a half he can't get his hands on it any more. So what is the chances they won't ask for it as after he has paid they may/may not ask for proof (apparently).

Also on another note the other cheapest option is a black box but he sometimes takes regular trips around and sometimes leaves the car at friends houses and families houses (as he wouldn't like to drink & drive and everyone is insured to take the car back in the morning so would he be penalized for leaving the car at a different address that is on his policy due to the black box?

Thanks guys

He can get a copy of the proof of NCD from his previous insurer. Some insurers will contact the previous insurer if you give them your policy number, or look it up somehow, but some will expect the proof of NCD. If they ask and he can't provide it, they will cancel the policy, which could cause him problems getting cover in future.

You need to check that QMH will accept NCD more than 12 months old. While some insurers accept no claims issued up to two years ago, with most insurers it lapses after 12 months.

As long as the car is kept at home most of the time it shouldn't be an issue, although I don't know enough about black box policies to know if there is any form of surcharge that might be payable if the car is left in a high-risk area.
  • OK thanks for the quick reply so what would happen if he can't get the proof or they don't accept proof over 12 months old? He's been worried as most of the stories on google are pure horror saying that they've cancelled policies or added thousands to their policy?
  • If he's asked for proof of the NCB and he can't supply it, the insurer will either remove the NCB and charge the rate without the discount, or if the risk is no longer acceptable; cancel the insurance back to the start of the contract and refund your granddad the money.
If the latter happens, he'll then have to declare a cancellation to any future insurer.

I would advise him to try and get proof of the NCB before he tries to use it.

Has his previous insurer/broker gone bankrupt? If not, there shouldn't be an issue obtaining a copy of the proof, although there may be a charge for it if they've supplied one before. Why is obtaining it such a problem?

QMH accept no claims up to 24 months old, so you're ok on that front.

As paddyandstumpy says, if they cannot confirm the no claims entitlement, either through their own checks or by your granddad supplying proof, they will either charge the full premium or cancel the policy.

Expect to need to upload a copy. I moved from Aviva to QMH and had to upload the proof desipite QMH being part of the Aviva group.

Also be aware that the discount of 19 years might get chopped when he comes to renew. Most insurers only go up to 9 or even less but the big differences are in the first 5 anyway.
