Best MPG car for under 3.5k ... or LPG

Hi due to new job I need a new car for motorway miles . Looking to spend circa 3-3.5k which car offers the best mpg for around this price? Also cheap tax £30 a year?

So far looking at Mini Cooper diesel - 72.4mpg £30 tax. 2008 reg
Renault Megan's dynamqiue 15dci 2010 reg . 68mpg £30 tax.

Anything better than these ? I can't seem bear the mpg of these two. Unless I look at LPG which seems a bit of a red herring tbh.

  • You won't get those figures in the real world.

HonestJohn site has a real MPG subsection, also worth reading his good and bad sections of any car you are interested in, the MINI bad section especially i'd give yourself a few minutes to read, plus that engine will be PSA 1.6 Diesel, i'll leave you to spend the rest of the month researching that one.

On a good trip up the motorway my 2L diesel with an average of 42mpg easily beat my sisters supposedly more efficient 57mpg smaller engined Renault Diesel.

If the cheap tax is a deciding factor, then we know you will be making a poor choice.

  • Don't buy a car based on the tax bracket alone. A ton saved on tax but a car with a thirsty engine will cost you more than that 100 over the year in fuel.

That 2008 mini diesel has lots that can go wrong based on the age of the car/that engine - as already mentioned its probably the PSA 1.6 diesel which is, well, not popular.

Of those two I'd go the Renault but tbh I'd ignore the tax completely and look at cars which score better on the Real MPG section of Honest John and look for those, not be led by 30 quid tax bracket.

What do you mean by LPG being a red herring?
I have owned many saloons with LPG. They are fantastic. If you are doing a lot of travelling, don't you want space and comfort? With your budget, you can get a nice car with LPG and pace and grace to boot!

Was it broken? I'm usually averaging 60+MPG in my 2L Mondeo diesel on that kind of trip and it'll return 36/37MPG towing our 26ft long twin axle caravan. My last Mondeo did the same even at 165,000 miles. Only time I've seen fuel economy that low out of any of my 2L diesels is when I've been towing.

Probably just a very heavy right foot. Just seen the same poster complaining about the efficiency and pollution of electric cars on another thread, so perhaps he was just feeling guilty. :-)

Honda Civic 2.2d 8th gen would be where my money would go - if you buy one for £2500 and keep £1000 for an uprated clutch and re-map you will be a very happy chap!
