Hello
Does anyone use an oral irrigator (Water Pik, etc)
All the advice now seems to be that you have to clean below the gum line.
Thanks

I have a Panasonic EW-DJ40 DentaCare Cordless Rechargeable Oral Irrigator, bought 2008/2009 it suits me well as I have several gaps between teeth where food lodges and difficult to floss or teepee away.
Previously I had a Waterpik which packed up within guarantee and was replaced FOC by another which packed up about 3 months out of guarantee, seemed to be a common problem at that time.
When (if) necessary I will replace with another panasonic, replacement nozzles from aMazon, I bought 2 new ones this year only after mislaying the original 2 some where, they may yet turn up in our caravan which has been put away for the winter:D

Is it plain water?0 -
I use plain, slightly warm boiled water, sometimes with some salt added, if I have a sore mouth for more than a day or two I use a herbal type mouth wash added to the water. I only use a commercial mouth wash if advised to by dentist of hygienist, personally I do not believe in using them on a daily basis, but appreciate others may have different needs/habits/poor dental hygiene. The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. This seems like interesting reading.

I would take anything "Dr" Mercola says with a big pinch of salt particularly if its dental related http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/February-2012/Dr-Joseph-Mercola-Visionary-or-Quack/ https://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/mercola.html0

Or Dr Mercola may be right and is may be a head of his time.
They said Galileo was mad and arrested him for saying that the Earth revolved around the Sun.

Totally agree.
These big money companies will always be larger and have the means to discredit the truth, for their own gains!
If you are really concerned about the health of your mouth, start using a twig toothbrush.
Also include garlic in your diet. bad breath you say? Hmmm, wonder who put that pattern of thought in your head!
@OP - Can you tell me where the advice is about below the gumline? I'd be interested in reading this. I myself use the Philips one now and again. I just put plain water in the tank. You maybe right.

It's the love of money.
Paul's first letter to Timothy Chapter 6 Verse 10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
I hate it when people misquote stuff. It's a bugbear of mine.
Mercola is a quack

Businesses will spin their advice to suit themselves, and this is where the issue of trust comes in.0 -

Well - Galileo did things that could be proved properly and independently by anyone else with the same equipment in the same way. i.e. proper science.
The church just had 'beliefs' and a rigid structure that said what they 'believed' was far more important than what anyone could 'prove' with heretical 'science'.
We now seem to be in an era where things are going the other way.
'Woo Woo' pseudo science and conspiracies are correct because people 'believe' them - even when all evidence is overwhelmingly against them - I mean - twig toothbrushes for goodness sake!!
And your comment at the end - "Are you a dentist, or do you work in this field?".
Obviously - 'experts' are the new Galileo - burnt as heretics with their 'facts' and 'proper proof' that defies the new religion of 'A bloke on the internet'
For what it's worth - I would say that proper use of (cheap) interdental brushes is far better than spending money on an expensive gadget for interdental cleaning and keeping pockets around the gums healthy. But that's just evidence based research. So probably not worth anything! How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0
