I loved Sony Vaio laptops and am on my fourth, now 4 yrs old. The touchpad is suffering from selective stubbornness. I have a spare Vaio too, but Sony stopped making them
If you had a Vaio, what did you replace yours with ?
What I use it for:
Working on my website and blog (own domains hosted by WordPress Premium may switch to WordPressBusiness)
Surfing the Internet - Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge using Windows 10
Watching DVDs with PowerDVD plus catchup and YouTube
Twitter
Listening to music via Amazon Music
Writing documents on Open Office
Writing on Scrivener
Uploading documents to Amazon Cloud Drive
It needs to be fairly tough, physically. I use it a LOT. It's mobile within the house but I have a couple of Kindles and a phone I use away from home.
The processor needs to be able to keep up with VirginMedia HomeWorks up to 300Mb.
I don't store much on my laptop so don't need a huge amount of memory but although I housekeep daily, a decent amount of RAM would be useful.
Budget is £300 above that would need finance deal unless I save up but it's being PITA so can't see me struggling for more than a month so max £600 then finance.
Any ideas would be gratefully received, thank you !

If it's need to be tough, but not rugged, then Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad is the way to go, preferably T series, with the old school keyboard layout (not the one that tries to be a fake Macbook, as these are terrible to use).“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

+1 to the Thinkpad.
But why not try a wireless mouse with your old laptop? This is a newer version of the one my wife uses:

The USB receiver is tiny, does not stick out from the USB port much more than 1 CM.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
