i use my windows 10 HP envy laptop for a couple of hours each morning. i do not move around with it. i tend to use it on battery and recharge as and when needed, but i read somewhere that if possible you should use a laptop plugged into the mains whenever you can.

is this correct? i have no problem having it plugged in, i just assumed it would not be good for the overall life of the battery to always be on charge (the battery is not one you can just unclip and remove).

anyone that can clarify this for me please?

    many thanks.

This is what happens when you put lots of techs in a room.

So to avoid the Myths and other !!!!!s in the night figure it out for yourself

You can't manage what you do not track so

    Go download the free BatteryInfoView

Make a note of the status of your battery, do so every day for a month with it plugged in as you operate now.

Then try a month removing the cable till it has run down completely and only then recharge it

Then another month making sure it is at 62,3453% charged.

Go to the fridge, get a cold beer.

Reality is that you battery will last you 2 to 3 years, maybe as much as 5.

I use my laptop off the mains all the time but with the battery taken out. This way, it doesn't lose any charge capacity from being overcharged. If i ever need to move the laptop about and mains is impractical then i slot in the battery.

It will lose charge (and charge capacity) over time regardless. Make sure you don't let the charge drop too low or it won't charge up again. But otherwise, this method should keep your battery in good condition for as long as possible.

    *snip*

If you want a simple rule (for li-ion batteries), just don't keep them at 100% charge all the time.
