If the walls really pose such a big problem then perhaps you can try using Powerline networking products such as these.

I have used the Netgear DG834G for a number of years and it is very good.

Whatever router you decide to get make sure that you secure your wireless connection with MAC address filtering and encryption (64 bit is sufficient) for home use. If you don't do this you will be at risk of others using you connection to download etc (i.e. war driving). The wireless security is not enabled on the router out of the box so it is something you will have to do yourself - quite easy actually.

I suppose the honest answer is I don't know if they are a big problem or not yet as I don't have broadband at the moment ... it's just that since I started to try to understand the subject, it seems to be a minefield of various problems with router reliability/stability, connection, range etc that I'm trying to avoid.

I'm beginning to think I should just get a Speedtouch 585 as:
    a) ADSL24 have recommended it which puts an 'obligation' on them and ...
    b) they should also be clued up/willing to help get the thing going if i have problems
    c) the 585 seems quite popular so help is available elsewhere
    d) if the thing can't push a signal to the preferred room, these plugs seem to be a possible solution, though I would prefer to get it 'right first time'.

The next question (if that's the decision) would be what exactly to buy. Cheapest I can find is £51 inc. shipping for the 585, or £70 inc. for the router plus USB adaptor bundle. Should I get a PCMCIA card in preference to a USB adaptor for the laptop and, if so, which one? The SpeedTouch 110G Wireless CardBus Adapter, at £23 extra?

    Thanks.
  • Netgear's are prettier.

Why don't you borrow the inlaws, to check the signal.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Sounds like it won't be allowed to be visible!
The router will have to go next to the PC (in fact right next to the system unit, on the floor), which is next to the BT line input. I know my wife's views and There.Is.No.Alternative, not even putting it on the nearby window ledge - hence why I need something that will definitely cope with this suboptimal position.

PCMCIA cards are preferable to USB.
