I have a VW Bora that is 2003, nearly 230,000 miles on the clock.

The engine is running well, but it wont go forever. I am tempted to see just how far I can push it though!!

I find myself more and more starting to look at cars and would welcome some suggestions as I of course have not looked at everything

I have been very happy with the car over the years, so another VW salooon would seem natural, but the Passat and Jetta's dont really excite me, they just feel a bit boring and beige.... some of them anyway.

I am thinking of a budget no more than £12k, would be targeting something up to 4 year old.

Some cars I like

- BMW 3 Series - Beautiful in certain colours, probably my fabourite, but a bit common?
- Volvo V40, something a bit different, but a lot more sensible
- Mercedes A180, although its not the best reviewed car, looks nice
- VW Golf - Sturdy, reliable, maybe not the most inspired choice

I do like saloon cars, but not totally opposed to a hatchback if it has 5 doors. But it must have a bit of go in it. My first car was a 1.2 Seat Ibiza, ok little car but much prefer an engine around 1.9 with a bit of muscle.

S60 perhaps, given OPs desire for a saloon?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have never liked estate cars I am afraid

I do like the look of the S60 ! One car I have never looked at actually!

Isn't the Volvo just a Ford Focus?

Yeah, I heard they share a lot of parts. I wouldn't be keen on Ford, personally.

Seriously at 230K assuming it's been serviced regularly, it's only just run in!
Lots of stories about 350K plus on VWs.
I remember looking when my old Passat got up around 150K and I wondered how long it had.
If you don't "want or need" a new car, I'd keep that one.

I used to polish and wax it, every few months and it looked great, but past few years the dreaded rust has formed on wheel arches and the sill. Dont think there is an easy way to sort that. Its just getting on in age.

Its perfectly safe, but just lost its aesthetics...

My Passat got the same. Rear wheel arches were starting to bubble etc.
In the end it was 21 years old, and one of the seals on the manifold went. It was an engine out job to fix it, and just at that time I didn't have the time or inclination to pull the engine to fix it. Otherwise it wasn't a bad car, and actually cleaned up quite well.
I scrapped it and got a banger as a run around. Later updated for various reasons.
TBH, now I wish I'd kept it. (I have room here)

Considered Honda? They will run forever.

If you want a saloon the Accord with the 2.2 diesel is awesome. £12k will also get you the new shape Civic, with either a 2.2 diesel or maybe the much cheaper to run 1.6 diesel engine. Civic is pretty big for a hatchback and really comfy for long distance driving.

    How about Skoda Octavia?

Not the S60, you're thinking of the Mk2 S/V40 which was built on a shared platform.
