Of course nothing should be dismissed. But it does help to have investments compatible with your objectives.

The advantage of dividend/interest paying investments is that given broad diversification the income is much more stable than the capital value.
Lots of people here are so clever that they can continue to trade at just the right time, have just the right cash buffer and chose the right stocks that grow at a consistent rate.
However, the rest of us are not blessed with such brilliance and want the drawdown part of their life to be as simple as possible. Give me a steady, growing IT dividend income and I can concentrate all my efforts on spending it.0
