Full Credit/Debit card numbers on Retailers copy of receipt - Why?

I have been using a credit card for years without any issues. But in the last 12 months I have had two separate fraudulent transactions occur. These were satisfactorily resolved with the credit card company. I am now even more vigilant. A recent discussion with a local retailer revealed that when I pay by Credit/Debit card the customer copy has only the last 4 digits of the card number displayed whereas the retailers has the whole number shown. I see this as a potential security issue and now ask to have the retailers copy or both copies. Both retailers I have spoken to to-date say they destroy their copy at the end of the day so why do they need the full credit card number displayed on their copy? From now on I will be asking for the retailers copy to at least give myself peace of mind. Just thought I would point this out to people as we generally do not see the retailers copy.

Its used for end of day banking, where if the card declines they can manually input it and reattempt.
This is only for those who dont have live terminals that take payment instantly.
Hence why those that are contactless enabled or that you see at self checkouts dont print a copy as these are live authorisations.0 -
You'd better ask if they are willing to give you their copy before you make the transaction, because I'd imagine they are entirely within their rights to refuse, in which case you need to decide whether to continue with the purchase before the payment is made.0
